When she noticed a job posting for a nighttime on-call hospice nurse, my mom decided to give it a try. She joked that because of her disability she never slept well anyways, so she she might as well do something productive at night. Because she visited patients in their homes, she didn’t have to spend long hours on her feet, as she would in a hospital setting. Hospice was a new concept at the time, and she became a trailblazer in the field. She helped hundreds of patients and their families find comfort and peace during difficult times. She recently retired after nearly 20 successful years.   If you are living with a disability and looking for a job that suits you, you can find your right job fit, too. You may have to try a couple things out before you identify what suits you, but the job force wants your skills and talents. I learned from watching my mom that accommodating a disability can hone skills like creativity, ingenuity, fortitude, optimism and resilience. These are qualities that every employer wants.   The ADA and the EEOC I’m sure you’ve noticed that at the bottom of every job post every company explains that it won’t discriminate against candidates who have disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act became a law in 1990, “making it illegal for employers to discriminate against qualified job applicants and employees based on their physical or mental disabilities. The law also requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees who need them because of their disabilities, unless doing so would cause undue hardship.”   The ADA works with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which since 1965 has been enforcing regulations that aim to create a more just and fair professional climate in the U.S. The EEOC provides excellent resources that clarify your rights as an employee or an applicant as well as those of your employer or prospective employer. If you are not familiar with these materials, get acquainted in preparation for your search. The Basics of your Search     It is not necessary to mention your disability in your cover letter or on your resume. When you are called for an interview, that is a good time to ask any accessibility questions you need to pose. Whether you need wheelchair accessibility, sign language interpretation during your job interview or other other assistance, you are protected in requesting any of these accommodations. A 2014 study of ove r 1,000  Danish entrepreneur couples found that these business couples were more likely to join forces because the female partner had “limited outside opportunities in the labor market.”In these cases, co-entrepreneurship between partners raised the income of the wife  during the life of the business and even after it  ended.The study’s researchers  suggested that these relationships work because “co-entrepreneurial couples are likely to trust each other better and to have more valuable carrots and sticks to force the other to invest in the business relationship.”Downsides: gendered stereotypes persist between couples at workA different 2014 study came to the opposite conclusion, however. Using 2005 U.S. population data, they found that women were less likely to be in charge if they co-founded new businesses with their husbands.Gendered expectations of who gets to be a breadwinner and who has to be a homemaker were brought into the businesses: “women would face relativel y fewer disadvantages in leading businesses, were it not for effects of masculine/feminine accountability embedded in spousal relationships.”Although using merit-based criteria like a formal business template has been found to make work more equal between teams, only 20% of spousal teams made formal ownership agreements, compared to 45% of non-spousal teams in the study.The presence of children also altered working dynamics. Although men were three times as likely to lead the business when there weren’t any children, that likelihood decreased  as the family grew. The magic number is three children for women: women were more likely to take the lead in businesses when the couple had three children.Set boundaries if you  marry your co-workerThe main advice everyone gives if you do decide to become a spousal team is to set boundaries. You may have graduated from a great school with a dual-degree, but you’re still only one person with a lens that’s limited to what you know. That means you have implicit biases, strengths, and weaknesses. Consider these when selecting your “friendtors.” Instead of picking a handful of cheerleaders who have the same background and work experience as you, recruit people who are at various stages of different careers. I’m careful to tap “friendtors” at varying life stages, since these people can offer diverse perspectives on everything from balancing your personal and professional lives to managing people effectively and creating company culture. You want to have people who aren’t afraid to tell you “no,” and who don’t see themselves as being in direct competition with you. We so often think that in order for someone to help and mentor us, they need to be a big-shot vice president or have 20-plus years of professional experience. That’s simply not true. Don’t discount the people around you who have a host of wisdom, guidance, and skills to offer. My husband, for example, never gets caught in the gray areas of decision-making like I do. He’s the first person to tell me, “You’re doing great, but you handled that inappropriately and you’re not putting your foot down.” His strengths complement my weaknesses. My friendtors have helped me with everything from being an impactful manager to making difficult business decisions. And, like in any successful relationship, it’s important to reciprocate. Sometimes this simply means being open to receiving people’s advice and guidance (moving past defensiveness, which is often our first instinct). It’s also about offering support in any way you can. Find out what they think could make them more successful in their career and then work with your friendtors in a way that makes sense for them and their goals. Also make a point to meet people where they are â€" literally. If you know someone hates lunch meetings but loves the outdoors, for example, maybe you suggest going on a hike to discuss a topic of interest. Don’t forget to show your friendtors your appreciation, both when they help you and also just generally. Whether it’s with a thank-you note or a quick email update keeping them abreast of the successes to which they directly contribu ted, there’s no downside to being gracious. Even the most successful professionals struggle (and fail!). Much like a good friend, a good friendtor should support you no matter the circumstances. So it’s all the more important to surround yourself with people who will help you develop into the professional you want to be â€" people who believe in your purpose and plan. These same people should let you cry on their shoulders during the low points.
