Maybe this is what you are missing in your life
Maybe this is what you are missing in your lifeMaybe this is what you are missing in your lifeTherbeie was a large tree in the woods behind my parents house. It rose above the other trees and was my favorite. There were summer days before dusk when I would retreat to that tree.Id scale its branches to the top, looking out over a canopy of foliage. Id close my eyes and listen to the breeze dance through the leaves. Sitting securely in my wooded loft, Id feel the tree gently sway back and forth. It was so calm and peaceful. One time, I was beside the tree when a doe emerged out of the brush. She slowly came towards me. I stood motionless beside the tree trunk, knowing that any movement would startle her.The doe walked within a yard of me, stopping to sniff and flit her large ears back and forth. Surely she caught my scent, but didnt scare. Perhaps she sensed my benevolent heart. The encounter was exhilarating. It made me feel so alive.Stand by meI was reminded of that moment later in lif e, when I saw the movie Stand By Me. The film is a moving, coming of age story based on Stephen Kings novella The Body.Theres a scene in the movie when one of the boys, named Gordie, is apart from his friends. Gordie encounters a doe that crosses by him on some railroad tracks. Watch this brief scene below.Gordie decides not to tell his companions about the deer he saw. A creative boy, he realizes the others will not understand or entirely appreciate what he felt. Its a beautiful scene in the movie and one I relate to from my own deer encounter.Experiencing such close proximity with nature touches you. Its not really the call of the wildbret so much as a whisper. Something on a deep, primal nature glides serenely into your presence. Its like all the energy and mystery of life takes a moment to greet you. To remind you that theres so much more than whats presently in your head.Theres so much beauty and hopefulness out there, if we only slow down enough to see it. To experience it.Soon were back at itIn this technological age of smart phones, computers, travel and rushing about, its easy to disconnect from nature. We are seduced by bright screens.Artwork by John P. WeissWe zone out to talking heads on the evening news. We attend weekend wine parties to gossip and parrot political talking points. We might book a vacation on some caribbean beach, play in the water and feel the sand. But soon were back at it. Making appointments, answering texts, getting ahead.Deep down, our hearts grow weary.Theres nothing wrong with making a living. Theres a lot of satisfaction in being ambitious and realizing the fruit of your labors. Some question the whole work/life balance thing as a hoax. They say its just life. Dont try to bifurcate it. It will just stress you out. Work and play as you please.I disagree. I think its important to unplug. To make time for nature. For fresh air and quiet reflection.PhenomenonDo yourself a favor and watch the movie Phenomenon, starring John Travol ta and Robert Duvall. Travolta plays a small town auto mechanic named George Malley. In the film, something happens to George Malley that makes him a genius with telekinetic powers. The film explores the untapped power of the human mind, as well as the notion that all living things are somehow connected.Reference is made in the movie to the largest living organism on the planet. Whales come to mind, but actually its an aspen grove in Colorado. The movie alludes to an eastern notion that we are all connected in some cosmic way. In one scene, George Malley explains to two childrenEverything is on its way to somewhereeverything.Other scenes in the film show trees gently swaying in the breeze, invoking a peaceful sort of serenity. Much like I felt in the trees behind my parents home.I mention the movie Phenomenon, and my own treetop experiences, because I think theres something to this. Ive felt it above the cliffs of Carmel, and while painting the cottonwoods in Idaho.Idaho clearing. Oil on panel, by John P. WeissWhenever I escape the trappings of modernity and get outdoors in nature, I begin to relax. I slowly start to feel a peaceful calm permeate my being. Time slows down. It seems to nourish my soul and restore my spirit. The whisper of innocenceWhen we look at a baby deer or newborn child, we see their innocence. Their promise. Their perfection. Before all the bumps, bruises and scars of life.Retreating back into nature is like hiking back to a time of innocence. Maybe the perfection of nature reminds us of our own divine perfection? Beneath the layers of lifes unwanted incursions, disappointments, pain and suffering.Perhaps the fresh air, grand mountains and windswept shorelines recalibrate our spirit and tease out a bit of our better selves?Ocean study. Oil on panel, by John P. WeissI think the call of the wild is really the whisper of innocence. Calling us home. To a place so far away and yet so familiar. To a feeling that comforts us, like a warm blanket.Ke ep close to Natures heart and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean. - John MuirA simple investmentI need to make more time for this. I need to pack my paintbox, a few supplies and go. Drive down the coast and hike into some hidden grove. Commune for awhile with the birds, squirrels, trees and grandeur of nature.I need to make it more of a priority, this simple outdoor gift that life has bestowed upon us. And my hope is that these words will inspire you, too.Maybe this is whats missing in your life? Maybe its time to reclaim your relationship with the outdoors. Your dance with nature.Wherever you are in your life, get outside and restore your spirit. Its a simple investment that costs nothing but time.Ill wager it will pay dividends in your life. Why you should put your laptops away in meetings
Why you should put your laptops away in meetingsWhy you should put your laptops away in meetingsAs someone who grew up with computerssince elementary school, I dont feel nostalgia for the smell of ink orthe feel of paper. But when it comes to taking leides in meetings, I try to fight the lure of my laptop too. The sirens call of my laptops distractions just make it too hard to focus.Yes, Im jotting down notes but I have also been conditioned to click immediately on pushnotifications by a lifetime of laptops and engineers designing addictive featuresthatmake us want to drop everythingand click.Im unable to resist a ping, even if the email or Slack message is something that can wait. The pen is mightier than the screenA psychology science study backs upwhy the best thing to do is to surrender and shut down our screens during meetings and lectures. A 2014 study found that university students who took longhand notes were able to retain more complex information than students taking notes o n laptops. In other words, even though the laptop notetakers were able to type more information than the slower longhand notetakers, that information wasnt necessarily helpful. Both longhand and computer notetakers were able to recall facts, but the longhand notetakers were much better at answering conceptual questions that required analysis, like how do Japan and Sweden differ in their approaches to equality within their societies? In these type of critical thinking questions, the computer notetakers performed significantly worse.Longhand notetakers were also better at recalling information long after the lecture was over Even when allowed to review notes after a weeks delay, participants who had taken notes with laptops performed worse on tests of both factual content and conceptual understanding, relative to participants who had taken notes longhand.Researchers believed this is because laptop notetakers are more inclined to take verbatim notes instead of writing what theyre hearing in their own words. That hurts them. By summarizing, paraphrasing, concept mapping in their own words, the longhand notetakers were able to make deeper connections to the text than the shallower processingverbatim copying gave laptop notetakers. The optics of staring at a screen in a meetingEven when I am writing relevantnotes on a screen, Im aware that looking down at a screen and not at my colleague makes it seemas if Im not paying attention. As journalist Kim Bui wrote in her management newsletter, longhand notes not only help you focus, they also help everyone around you know that you have their undivided attention I realized people assumed when Iwas typing on my laptop that I was texting or Slack-ing. Now I only bring my phone and notebook unless Im presenting something. It signals that I am all in, totally present and relieves me of distractions (Slack). In todays pitch meeting, I did not bring my laptop, and though I felt the itch to type and I dont enjoy the look of my scraggly handwriting, I noticed that it forced me to listen and be fully present to my colleagues.I use my laptop in every other facet of my job, but when it comes to notetaking, I concede to the superior power of paper and pen.

6 Signs of Ageism in the Workplace and How to Handle It
6 Signs of Ageism in the Workplace and How to Handle It6 Signs of Ageism in the Workplace - and How to Handle It6 Signs of Ageism in the Workplace - and How to Best Handle ItAre you ready to slow down at work and retire? We didnt think so eitzu sich. You might imagine that the modern-day workplace has left discrimination in the past century because the new wave of employers, HR managers, and employees have all been well-educated about the value of an inclusive work environment. And yet, ageism is still alive and well. What does ageism look like? A 28-year-old female CPA might be told that she is too young to be a controller. A job candidate in his 50s could hear that the company is looking for a recent college graduate with a lot of energy and no bad habits, while an employee in her 60s might be counseled out of attending an industry conference, ostensibly to allow her to take it easy this month. Although ageism can certainly cut both ways, most complaints and studies have focused o n the experience of the 50+ crowd.According to AARP, 64 percent of workers have witnessed or experienced age discrimination. Even though theres been plenty of research that overturns common stereotypes about older workers, the new ways of thinking havent been fully absorbed yet. And so, its important to be alert for signs of ageism and to know your options if you or someone in your family experiences age-based discrimination in the workplace. What is ageism anyway? The best place to start is with some legal background. The Age Discrimination Employment Act (ADEA) was passed in 1967. From that point on, age has been one of the protected characteristics in the workplace, which means employers cannot discriminate against employees based on their age. This includes hiring, firing, work assignments, and vorrckens. As a side note, its important to know that this legal protection doesnt cover employees of smaller companies because businesses with fewer than 20 employees are exempt from the A DEA.The intent of the legislature may have been clear-cut, yet real-life applications are anything but. For example, imagine an accounting department at an insurance company. The department is run by a female accounting manager whos 30 years old. One of the staff accountants, Joann, is 62 and has been with the insurance company for over 25 years. Another staff accountant is a brand-new college graduate named Josh who has been with the company for a year and a half. Now, imagine that the performance review cycle rolls around. Joann gets average and below-average marks with a standard company-wide cost of living (COL) salary increase. Josh gets high-performance marks, the same COL increase, a performance bonus, and a versetzung to accounting lead. Is this age discrimination? Not necessarily. Its possible that the young accounting manager has negative stereotypes about older employees, but its also possible that the outcome had nothing to do with age and that Joshs performance was simply stronger than Joanns. The manager may have observed that Joann makes repetitive mistakes, is resistant to changing her account reconciliation format to match the new standard thats been rolled out earlier in the year, and has also missed several important deadlines. On the other hand, Josh may have gone to great lengths to get his work done on time. He may have taken the initiative to meet with professionals outside his department to understand and resolve reconciliation issues that had been lingering since before he joined the company or even volunteered to take on additional work when another accountant was out sick for a week during the year-end close. This example wasnt chosen to imply that there is no such thing as age discrimination, but rather to emphasize that human interactions are inherently messy. In any group of professionals, its virtually impossible to have two individuals with the exact same performance. Peoples contributions to the company vary from partie to person (a nd even for the same person over the course of several years). And, like it or not, we all automatically notice and recognize other peoples age as we interact with them. Age distinctions and performance differences arent the problem but in order to have an inclusive workplace, its important to separate the two. What does ageism in the workplace look like? Most hiring managers and HR professionals would tell you that there is no ageism in their company, but reality isnt this straightforward. Its possible for age discrimination to go completely unnoticed. Its also possible that benign behaviors might seem like ageism to older employees. In other words, dont assume that you are in the clear because you work at a forward-thinking company, but also, just because something feels like ageism doesnt make it so.Here are a few examples of what age discrimination might look likeLearning opportunities are automatically offered to younger employees not older ones. This can include educational c oursework, access to reimbursement for continuing education, professional or industry conference attendance, etc.Being overlooked or passed over for challenging assignments. This may also look like an unfair share of unpleasant or tedious assignments given to older employees.Being left out of client meetings or company activities.A spoken or unspoken assumption that you are not entitled to take time off for family commitments because you dont have young kids at home.Disparaging comments and remarks about age. This could be framed as subtle and playful, with others joking about your age, retirement plans, slow typing speed, gasping for breath while coming up the stairs, etc. Or, it could be downright aggressive (e.g. pointed and/or cornering comments that pressure you to retire and free up the position for another professional). Being passed over for raises and promotions. As in our example above, this one can get tricky. Different raises and promotion decisions may indicate age-base d discrimination, or they might be a reflection of individual performance.Whats the best way to deal with ageism in the workplace?Step one Dont assume that you or your workplace are 100 percent immune to age discrimination. Our brains work by relying on established stereotypes for faster processing and decision making. Learn to recognize your own thinking patterns. Challenge your assumptions. If you see signs of ageism that arent directed at you, dont distance yourself by thinking that this could never happen to you.If you have experienced this, or if you worry about that as a possibility, heres how to deal with ageism in the workplaceInvest in your continued growth and development. Read, stay up to date on trends and best practices, and push yourself to do better every year. Get a mentor, whether within your current company or outside, who is dedicated to supporting your success.Make a commitment to fight the stereotype of an aging professional who is uncomfortable with change and technology, low on energy, and coasting without ambition. Todays older workforce is a wealth of industry and institutional knowledge. However, theres value in not launching into stories about the good old days. Dont be the one to bring up your age as the reason why your boss should take it easy on you. Dont fall into a belief that your workplace owes you something for your past contributions. Dont buy into age stereotypes your own thinking can affect how you act.Project the same level of polish and professionalism as your younger colleagues. Perhaps you are feeling secure in your position as an established contributor, but thats no reason to falter in doing your best to represent your company.RelatedWant to Get Promoted at Work? Heres How to Boost Your Chances of SuccessFinally, if you do experience signs of age discrimination, take detailed notes write down the dates and the names of witnesses to conversations. Reach out to an employment attorney who can assess your situation and advise you on next steps.Just like your younger colleagues, keep your network active and your options open. Spend some time each year updating your resume and your online profiles make sure to follow the most current standards so as to not date yourself. At the end of the day, the best way to prevent yourself from falling victim to age discrimination is to stay on top of your career game.Need to update your resume just in case? The Perpetual Job Search
The Perpetual Job SearchThe Perpetual Job SearchWhether you are looking to climb inside your organization or find a new job, step carefully and always make progress. Imagine you are standing on the bottom rung of a ladder in a 20-foot-deep swimming pool. The ladder starts at the bottom of the pool, goes straight up all the way through an opening in the ceiling, and then extends 20 feet beyond that into the sky.If you stay at the bottom rung, you will eventually drown. However, if you keep making progress one rung at a time, you will eventually get your head above water and breathe easily, and then you will eventually work your way into the wide-open sky.Every Job Offers RungsIn the course of every year you can climb a rung on your career ladder regardless of whether or not you leave your current lokalitt. The key is to proactively create the rungs and then climb them one at a time. There are two types of job searches one inside your current organization and one outside your current organization.Searching for a job inside your organization begins with a conversation with your boss. Set up a meeting with her and ask these two questionsQuestion one What are the two fruchtwein important outcomes that you want to improve in our organization over the next six to 10 months?Question two What are the most important things you feel need to be accomplished in buchung for us to really improve those two outcomes?Consider what your boss has to say, reflect on what you can do to help her achieve those desired outcomes, and set up another meeting with her to discuss your thoughts on how you can play a role in improving those results. Once the two of you agree on the role you will fulfill toward improving those outcomes, pour yourself into executing the details of that role as well as you can.If at the end of six months or a year, you have clearly added relevant value toward the achievement of your bosss most important objectives, you are in a position to gain greater responsi bilities and compensation in your current role, take on a new position in your organization or look outside your organization for the next rung on the ladder. Avoiding career stagnation is a crucial step in generating perpetual job growth. Doing your activities at work really well does not always equate to perpetual job growth. The key is to be seen as a value adder, someone who increases the chances that your organization will achieve what it wants to achieve. One way to highlight the mechanism with which you will add value to your organization is to clarify with your boss the desired outcomes and the role you will take toward improving them.Learn From Each RungPerpetual job growth is a function of being always prepared to add more value than you did with your last set of responsibilities. Consequently, taking time to learn from every career experience provides the energy and the insight you will need to move effectively to the next rung on the ladder.Once a month answer these ques tionsWhat was my objective for the past month? What did I actually achieve relevant to that objective? What did I do to try to achieve the objective? What did I do that worked well and why did it work well? What did I do that did not work well and why did it not work well? What lessons did I learn or relearn in the past month? What will I do the saatkorn and what will I do differently going forward to improve my performance and my results? If you will take roughly 15 minutes each month to answer those seven questions, you will dramatically improve your capacity to add value in ways that will generate sustainable improvement in results. In this manner, each rung on your career ladder will provide you with numerous insights that you will be able to use to legitimately deserve an opportunity at the next rung either inside or outside of your current organization.Be Open to Every PossibilityClimbing a ladder straight upward from the bottom of the pool is pretty straightforward - you go straigh t up. Climbing a career ladder is not as intuitively obvious. You dont always just take the next job right in front of you. Here are two questions to keep in mindQuestion one What is the sky that I want to be working in five years from now? What type of work do I want to be doing, what type of organization do I want to be working in and what type of compensation do I want to be receiving?Question two What is the next best job I should do in order to make progress toward my desired career outcome in five years? Then work to gain that type of job either in your current organization or outside your organization.By answering these two questions you will make the process of climbing your career ladder a carefully chosen climb versus one where you take every step that other people tell you to take. Not only do you have to climb one rung at a time, but you also have to carefully select the rungs you step on.

The Most Popular Presumed Incompetent
The Most Popular Presumed Incompetent Judging competency The Supreme Court of the USA established competency so as to be certain that a defendant can rationally take part in and understand the court approach. A different court proceeding regarding guardianship has to be held. Counsel is required in all scenarios, even in situations where it is clear that the kid lacks the capacity to make decisions for him or herself. The minors counsel or the court can express a doubt concerning the minors competency. The Ideal Strategy for Presumed Incompetent Child molestation happens when an individual has sexual contact with a different individual whos too young to consent to the contact. Sex offender registration usually means the kids anthroponym is going to be part of a database maintained by law enforcement thats available to the general public. Certain juvenile sex offenses cannot be sealed, therefore, if your son or daughter is charged with a sex offense, it is important to have a seasoned attorney present info on your youngsters behalf to negotiate for a resolution that will enable your child to seal her or his case later on. When someone is judged to be incompetent, a guardian is appointed to manage the individuals property and individual affairs. Someone hurt in an accident or other mishap might have the ability to sue for compensation so long as the victims lawyer can show that the other party acted negligently. A defendant also may request a closed trial, although they must demonstrate an open trial would hinder their rights to a fair hearing and there are no acceptable alternatives that could guarantee an unbiased trial. When its used to refer to the mental condition of an individual subject to legal proceedings, it means the man or woman is neither equipped to comprehend the character and results of the proceedings nor adequately able to help legal counsel with his defense. Negligence on the portion of the victim contributing to the origin of t he mishap or to the seriousness of the injuries can be taken into account by a judge or a jury to diminish the damages awarded. Furthermore, if either attorney or the court questions the mental state or condition of the defendant, there has to be a motion to boost the matter and the criminal proceedings have to be suspended. A prosecutor states a central Illinois 9-year-old is predicted to be charged Tuesday with five counts of first-degree murder in relation to the deadly trailer fire. In the event the crime carries a sentence of six months or fewer, though, a defendant could be tried by just a judge, even though states supply a jury whatever the crime or punishment. Conviction of crime for a ground of impeachment is the field of Rule 609. When its used to refer to the legal qualification of someone, it means the partie doesnt have the legal capacity to put in a contract. When its employed to describe an expert duty or obligation, it usually means that the individual has demo nstrated a lack of ability to execute professional functions. Where adults lack capacity other individuals will need to make the decision in their opinion. Without the presence of this kind of impairment an adult cant be assessed as lacking capacity. If a party doesnt comprehend the character and results of the contract when its formed, they are regarded as having mental incapacity. A witness wholly without capacity is tough to imagine. The simple fact a person does not fully understand the complete meaning and all ramifications of a contract doesnt follow that the individual lacks contractual capacity. An expert person who fails to fulfill the duties required of that profession could possibly be judged incompetent. Presumed Incompetent Explained To begin with, the majority of people are incompetent. The kid is simply allowing somebody else to act for him. If two people have precisely the same sentence, no issue. The individual also needs to be able to perceive and narrate . Life, Death and Presumed Incompetent Tell your company what you would like. Internal efforts to stop problems wont ever address the situation. Patients can only refuse treatment by way of an advance decision, they cant commission treatment beforehand. The main reason for adopting a real understanding standard is the fact that it focuses on the treatment problem faced by the individual. Because it is dependent upon the topic matter. An ability to understand approach prevents that abuse because it doesnt count on the individuals possessing specific grasp of the treatment being supplied. Some commentators need a true comprehension of the treatment info, but others take an overall ability to comprehend the treatment being supplied. Educating them about the advantages and disadvantages outlined within this guide helps keep you in the clear of any misunderstandings, and can result in more jobs in the future. The exact same isnt always true, however, for people who happen to have disabilities. In many instances, juveniles act out sexually as they have been victims of sexual abuse themselves, or are afflicted by confusion regarding sex generally speaking. Knowing these reasons have become the most important part of defending juveniles charged with a sex offense. In a patient-centered approach to treatment, informed consent makes it possible for the patient to produce an autonomous decision with the right info. Every patient has the constitutional right, dependent on the rights of privacy and self-determination, to determine what medical treatment they will receive. If a kid is referred to the SAY program they is going to be offered services including treatment. Conversely, if somebody isnt competent to provide informed consent, it is vital to employ an alternate decision-making process, like the use of a proxy, to ascertain whether treatment needs to be provided. In the 1890s, Illinois became among the very first places on earth to set a juvenil e court, thereby taking minors from the adult system, Ms Clark explained. It recommends that children under 14 ought never to be prosecuted, regardless of the crime. An adult 18 years old and older can give consent for their own therapy, unless they have a guardian whos designated to give consent for the person. 1 person reads only whats on the card.

Identify your bosss prioritiesIts no wonder that my colleague and Ladders Founder Marc Cenedella often advises job seekers to ask the hiring manager during an interview, How do you (Mr. or Ms. Future Boss) get a gold star at the end of the year? How can I best help you do that? A sure way to win your managers praise is to help him earn recognition and thanks from his manager. If youre uncertain of your bosss priorities, ask for clarity during your next one-on-one meeting.Take initiativeLook for opportunities to take initiative and market your value. For example, you can volunteer to present to other groups in the company or mentor a junior colleague on your team. Dont merely do whats expected of you go above and beyond Your manager will appreciate your initiative and may reward you with opportunities that are m ore challenging or require you to take on greater responsibility.Treat your boss as a clientIf youre in the service business, you already know how important it is to anticipate your customers needs. Think of your boss as a client and provide the saatkorn service. This could be as simple as preparing a report your boss is sure to want for an upcoming management meeting before she has to submit an official request. The longer you work with your boss, the easier it will be to read between the lines and anticipate her needs. If youre new to a team, befriend a colleague who can help translate your bosss expectations so you can quickly get up to speed.Make yourself an assetStay current with your industrys news and latest trends by subscribing to relevant publications and joining associations related to your trade. Attend seminars and other training workshops in and out of the amtsstube to boost your skill set and remain up to speed with the latest technologies related to your trade. By br inging this newfound knowledge back to your organization, you are becoming an even more valuable member of the team.Provide value in unusual waysLeverage the activities you enjoy outside the office to be a positive influence within your company. For instance, you could organize a team to participate in a local Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, volunteer to teach a yoga class once a month, or head up a suit drive for Dress for Success. By demonstrating a vested interest in the company and positively impacting its culture, youre improving your professional brand and your boss brand by extension in the workplace.

Tips for Job Seekers with Disabilities
Tips for Job Seekers with Disabilities Tips for Job Seekers with Disabilities My mother excelled at her job as a registered nurse until she developed a disability that rendered her unable to manage the long shifts on her feet. She was devastated and unsure of how to continue professionally. She tried a medical billing position that enabled her to sit during her shift, but working with paper instead of patients left her feeling dissatisfied. When she noticed a job posting for a nighttime on-call hospice nurse, my mom decided to give it a try. She joked that because of her disability she never slept well anyways, so she she might as well do something productive at night. Because she visited patients in their homes, she didnât have to spend long hours on her feet, as she would in a hospital setting. Hospice was a new concept at the time, and she became a trailblazer in the field. She helped hundreds of patients and their families find comfort and peace during difficult times. She recently retired after nearly 20 successful years. If you are living with a disability and looking for a job that suits you, you can find your right job fit, too. You may have to try a couple things out before you identify what suits you, but the job force wants your skills and talents. I learned from watching my mom that accommodating a disability can hone skills like creativity, ingenuity, fortitude, optimism and resilience. These are qualities that every employer wants. The ADA and the EEOC Iâm sure youâve noticed that at the bottom of every job post every company explains that it wonât discriminate against candidates who have disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act became a law in 1990, âmaking it illegal for employers to discriminate against qualified job applicants and employees based on their physical or mental disabilities. The law also requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees who need them because of their disabilities, unless doing so would cause undue hardship.â The ADA works with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which since 1965 has been enforcing regulations that aim to create a more just and fair professional climate in the U.S. The EEOC provides excellent resources that clarify your rights as an employee or an applicant as well as those of your employer or prospective employer. If you are not familiar with these materials, get acquainted in preparation for your search. The Basics of your Search It is not necessary to mention your disability in your cover letter or on your resume. When you are called for an interview, that is a good time to ask any accessibility questions you need to pose. Whether you need wheelchair accessibility, sign language interpretation during your job interview or other other assistance, you are protected in requesting any of these accommodations. You are not asking for a favor when you request an accommodation. You are asking for support you deserve, so donât feel that you have to apologize for an accommodation you need. You donât. The EEOC also has specific guidelines for what prospective employers are and are not allowed to ask job candidates during job interviews. So familiarize yourself with those in preparation for your interviews. Resources There are many helpful groups available on Facebook where you can do your research and pose your questions to experts and to other job seekers. Check out: Disability.gov and the National Council on Disability. You might also consider looking into the Ticket to Work program, a free employment service that helps those who receive Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income Benefits. The program provides job training and placement and career counseling. Good luck and happy searching!

Jenny McCarthy spills on The View and its toxic work environment
Jenny McCarthy spills on 'The View' and its toxic work environment Jenny McCarthy spills on 'The View' and its toxic work environment Jenny McCarthy lasted a year on the daytime talk show âThe View,â sitting alongside characters such as Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters. While her appearances and opinions (especially about vaccinations) were highly scrutinized, what was going on behind the scenes was next level.âThe View,â as it turns out, may have been a dysfunctional workplace full of office politics and cruel bullying.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!An excerpt from an upcoming book by Ramin Settodah about the show, Ladies Who Punch: The Explosive Inside Story of âThe View,â ran on Vulture, and featured an interview with McCarthy, who said the experience was her worst job in 25 years of working in show business.McCarthyâs tenure got off to a rocky start. One day on the âHot Topicsâ segment of the show, McCarthy brought up the subject of who singer Katy Perry was dating. During a com mercial break, Barbara Walters, looking upset, asked, âWho is that youâre talking about and why are you bringing her up?âMcCarthy reminded Walters that sheâd interviewed Perry just last week.Unfortunately, the reply only embarrassed Walters, who by then was having memory lapses. It was also her last year on the show.âI felt everyone kicking me under the table,â McCarthy said about her gaffe. The co-hosts dealt with Walters by literally kicking each other under the table â" âyou either had the knee hold or the kick.âMcCarthy then tried to befriend Whoopi Goldberg â" even visiting her house, but that relationship never bloomed, either. âThe table is an interesting dynamic because it reminds me a little bit of Survivor,â McCarthy said. âThere were allies, and there werenât a lot of people to choose from.âShe decided to ally with Sherri Shepard because they were both mothers with young boys. This left a power vacuum, with Goldberg and Walters fighting each ot her, both wanting to be the moderator.âIt broke my heart when Barbara would shuffle to Whoopi and say, âCan I moderate, please?â And Whoopi would say âno.â âOn air, McCarthy was getting increasingly shut out of the conversation.âPeople donât understand,â McCarthy said. âWhoopi can knock over anyone in a debate ⦠I was able to get a point out in three words - like âI donât agreeâ - and thatâs all I would be able to say. I would be stepped on or interrupted.âMeanwhile, Walters developed a fixation on what McCarthy was wearing on the show.âBarbara would check out what Iâm wearing. If she didnât agree with it, or it didnât complement her outfit, I had to change,â she said, gauging that in seven months she changed her outfit over 50 times at Walters request. But you had to feel sorry for Walters, who at one point collapsed backstage and had to be taken to the hospital. During the very end of her last year on TV, she asked Goldberg, yet again, if she could moderate. Goldberg said, yet again, âNo.ââEvery day I went home and I was miserable,â McCarthy said. âIt really was the most miserable Iâve been on a job in my 25 years of show business.âYou might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Mika and Morning Joe may lead you to ask Should you work with your spouse
Mika and Morning Joe may lead you to ask Should you work with your spouse Mika and Morning Joe may lead you to ask Should you work with your spouse After MSNBCâs âMorning Joeâ co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough confirmed their engagement on Thursday, they became the latest couple to publicly tie their professional lives to their personal ones. When we spend 90,000 hours of our lives at work, itâs easy to see how all that time together can be enough time for sparks to fly. As Scarborough himself put it before the relationship was confirmed, âWe have a crackling on-air chemistry, and a crackling off-air chemistry, too.âFrom mom-and-pop shops to companies founded by romantic partners, businesses run by couples are a significant trend outside of newsrooms as well. In the U.S., itâs estimated that 3 million small businesses in 2000 were couple-owned.In couple-run businesses, women earn moreFamily businesses can be rewarding - you spend more time with your loved ones- and fraught- professional arguments can become personal ones. But there is research that finds economic benefits to it. A 2014 study of ove r 1,000 Danish entrepreneur couples found that these business couples were more likely to join forces because the female partner had âlimited outside opportunities in the labor market.âIn these cases, co-entrepreneurship between partners raised the income of the wife during the life of the business and even after it ended. The studyâs researchers suggested that these relationships work because âco-entrepreneurial couples are likely to trust each other better and to have more valuable carrots and sticks to force the other to invest in the business relationship.âDownsides: gendered stereotypes persist between couples at workA different 2014 study came to the opposite conclusion, however. Using 2005 U.S. population data, they found that women were less likely to be in charge if they co-founded new businesses with their husbands.Gendered expectations of who gets to be a breadwinner and who has to be a homemaker were brought into the businesses: âwomen would face relativel y fewer disadvantages in leading businesses, were it not for effects of masculine/feminine accountability embedded in spousal relationships.âAlthough using merit-based criteria like a formal business template has been found to make work more equal between teams, only 20% of spousal teams made formal ownership agreements, compared to 45% of non-spousal teams in the study. The presence of children also altered working dynamics. Although men were three times as likely to lead the business when there werenât any children, that likelihood decreased as the family grew. The magic number is three children for women: women were more likely to take the lead in businesses when the couple had three children.Set boundaries if you marry your co-workerThe main advice everyone gives if you do decide to become a spousal team is to set boundaries. For Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough, who share a desk during their on-air job, it may mean making sure to build separations outside of their shared id entity. For others, that may mean physical separations: working in separate rooms, taking separate lunches, or working on opposite sides of the building. If you can avoid reporting to each other, do that. No one wants to be a direct report to their partner. One couple that worked at the same engineering firm said what helped their marriage and their careers was that âour roles are very, very different.âHarvard Business Review advises cultivating a âwork voice.â At home, you can talk over each other informally, but at work you need to treat your spouse as a co-worker when they raise concerns: âListen actively. Donât interrupt when others speak. Ask for clarification when you donât understand the other personâs point of view. Participate equally.âAbove all, spousal teams can be rewarding- you go into work knowing that someone is on your side- as long as you lay the groundwork first.

Nows a Great Time to Refresh Your ResumeHeres What to Do
Nowâs a Great Time to Refresh Your Resumeâ"Heres What to Do Nowâs a Great Time to Refresh Your Resume- Heres What to Do 3Out with the old, in with the new- the turning of the calendar inspires a desire for fresh starts. But why? âIn attorney-speak, itâs called a âbright-line pointâ (derived from the âbright-line ruleâ), which means a definite cut-off point- an exact moment in time, if you will- that distinguishes the past from the future,â says Denise Dudley, author of Work It! Get In, Get Noticed, Get Promoted. âAnd January 1st is probably the most practiced and celebrated bright-line point in our human existence! We can practically feel the cosmic shift as the calendar transitions from old year to new, inspiring us toward self-reflection and personal improvement.â Add to this mix the tendency of employers to schedule annual reviews around this time, and you have the perfect season to revise your resume! Whether youâre contemplating a job hunt or simply want to have this all-important document at the ready for whatever comes your way in 2019, hereâs how to refresh your resume. JOB SEARCHING? FIND OPEN POSITIONS Add accomplishments. While information from your review is fresh, judge how accurately your current resume reflects the tasks you perform and what youâve achieved. Change and add accomplishments as necessary. Remember that strong action verbs grab attention, and stating successes in quantifiable terms (such as saving X amount of dollars or improving efficiency by Y percent) paints a more vivid picture than generic terms. And donât forget to update other areas, such as volunteer work performed. Edit. On the flip side, have you reached a career point in which getting rid of certain things might enhance your resume? As Dudley notes, âIf youâre a 50+ person, donât turn your resume into a laundry list of all the jobs youâve held for the last 35+ years. Keep the spotlight on your last 10 years of relevant experience, and drop off all the old stuff.â A similar scenario can exist for younger workers. Including a part-time job from college may have helped demonstrate work ethic and experience on your first resume, but chances are that better choices now exist as youâve progressed in your career. Proof for accuracy. Double-check your header to ensure the contact information still holds true. The last thing you want is a hiring manager sending info to an email address you no longer check. While youâre at it, now is a good time to ensure current information for your references, too. Check for readability. When your new-and-improved document is complete, judge presentation. âPretend youâre viewing your resume for the first time,â Dudley says. âTo begin with, is it easily readable? Resume readers will toss your resume almost instantly if they canât quickly navigate their way through it. Next, is your resume contemporary and fresh looking, or does it look like you designed it back in the former century?â Some of Dudleyâs suggestions for modernizing include: sticking with one of the gold standards of legibility, like Georgia (if you like serif) or Helvetica (if you prefer sans-serif) using a clean, uncomplicated template with margins at around 0.7 inches minimum keeping the resume clean, crisp, professional, and short Remember that 21st-century resumes need to look fabulous not just in print but also on everything from a desktop PC to an itsy-bitsy phone screen. Check presentation on various devices. Better to learn about and correct a jumbled mess now rather than later. Happy with your sparkling new resume? Do one last spell-check and proofread to ensure youre truly putting your best foot forward this year!

Give a Speech, Get a Job
Give a Speech, Get a Job Give a Speech, Get a Job How giving speeches can propel your job search.âWhat?! Stand up in front of an audience and give a speech! Are you kidding? Iâd rather die!â Author: Just about everyone. In fact, most people are terrified to give speeches - but once you overcome your fear, speaking to audiences large or small can be a powerful way to generate job opportunities and drive your career. You will discover that by giving speeches, your credibility skyrockets. In essence, you are showcasing your talents, expertise and confidence.Frequently, after your presentation, you will be invited by a member of the audience to speak to another group. You may also be asked to work with companies in a consulting, contract or employment role to help them achieve success. Plus, a list of your presentations on your resume is a grand slam. You should also videotape your speech, edit it down to about five minutes and post it on YouTube. You will have instantaneously enhanced your Internet presence and brand image.Letâs take a look at how you can generate speaking opportunities. Then Iâll give you some easy tips and tricks on how to overcome your fear and give powerful presentations that leave your audience begging for more. Yes, even you can be a great speaker. You just have to make the effort and practice every opportunity you get.OK, now letâs go out and land some speaking engagements. You only need two things:1. You need a topic. Everyone is an expert at something. The problem is that many of you donât recognize your special talent as being noteworthy. Yet there are many people who can benefit from your knowledge. I donât care if you are young or old, rich or poor, employed or unemployed; you have a wealth of information that will benefit others. Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing: An administrator could speak on organization skills: âThrow Out the Old, in with the New: Organization Secrets that Will Save You Thousands of Dollars.â A housewife looking to get back in the job market could speak on coping with stress: âHow I Raised Five Kids, Kept My Sanity and Ran my House Like a Well-Oiled Machine.â An executive could speak on leadership: âGo Where No Others Have Gone, and Leave a Trail to Follow.â 2. You need an audience. You might not realize it, but there are a number of local clubs, non-profit organizations, community groups, church groups, social groups and trade associations in search of speakers. You just have to approach these groups with your topic, state why it is relevant to their audience, and show them a summary of your experience as someone with a vast amount of information to share with the group. You will be amazed at how easy it is to land those speaking gigs. Now I want you to overcome your fear - not your fear of speaking but your fear of revealing something of yourself. Most people fear speaking because they are afraid of how they might look or sound. I canât tell you how many times I have had new speakers say they just donât want to âmake a fool of myself.â It is rare that any speaker makes a fool of him- or herself. Usually it is the audience members that make fools of themselves! You need to understand that everyone has butterflies before giving a presentation. The secret is to get the butterflies to fly in formation. Hereâs how:1. Breathe deeply. Before you walk out in front of your audience, take a few deep breaths. Breathe in through your mouth, hold the oxygen in your lungs, and then expel through your nostrils. The fresh oxygen eases the tension and makes the mind work better. Try it a couple of times. You will see what I mean. I have a great videotape of Johnny Carson doing this before he would go on the Tonight Show. Yes, even Johnny Carson got butterflies. And before he walked on stage in front of millions in his TV audience, he would breathe deeply a couple of times to relax and get his mental juices flowing.2. Know your introduction. Donât memorize it, but practice many times so that it flows smoothly. 3. Know your material. A little tidbit: anyone who reads three books on any one subject knows 90 percent more than the rest of the world on that subject. Research, analyze, absorb and understand all the nuances of your material. 4. Know your audience. What is their expectation? Education level? Demographic? You want to adjust your presentation to the needs of the audience. 5. Interact with your audience. During your presentation, get out from behind the podium and interact. Ask questions, solicit comments and involve the audience in short give-and-take sessions. Everyone will feel more connected to you and respect your presentation. 6. Rehearse. Practice makes perfect. Donât memorize your speech. If you do, your speech will sound canned - but practice as many times as possible so you really know your material and what you want to say. Practice in front of your family - even your dog or cat - just make certain you practice. Now you have gotten the butterflies to fly in formation and you are ready to knock the socks off your audience. Take it a step further by putting pizzazz into your presentation by incorporating these tactics: Eye communication As you move about your audience, make direct eye contact with different individuals. Hold that eye contact for four to six seconds. That connection brings intimacy to your presentation and everyone feels your sincerity. Voice communication You want to display a roller coaster of energy. Use a combination of varied pace, pitch and pause. Gestures Novice speakers have a hard time making expansive gestures with their arms or body, and they restrict their movement in the audience. They stand like beanpoles in one spot. When you practice, practice with movement. Here is a challenge. Practice your speech without words. Just practice your body language. Touching their hearts My speaking philosophy is simple: âIf you touch my mind, I will be grateful, but if you touch my heart, I will never forget you.â Capture your audience with stories from the human experience: comedy, tragedy, romance, family, friends, living, dying, career success or career failure. Your audience will always identify with the human experience. You will have touched their hearts. You will have given a powerful presentation. Introductions with pizzazz Get your speech off to a great start by telling a story from the human experience. Or consider other introductions which can also be powerful including the following: ask provocative questions, present a startling fact or use relevant quotations. Conclusions that leave them begging for more Here is a common mistake made by almost every speaker. At the conclusion of the speech, he/she takes questions. Guaranteed the presentation will end on a flat note. Rather, you should indicate at the beginning of your speech that you will take questions, but then after the questions you will have some closing remarks. These closing remarks will be your opportunity to wow your audience. Your conclusions should include at least one of the following: establish self-esteem, incorporate a call for action, be a catalyst of ideas that help overcome problems, deal with crises, encourage involvement in their cause, or inspire them to embark on a noble quest.I have only scratched the surface in terms of using speaking to drive your career, but perhaps I have motivated you to learn more and begin the process. Most of you have heard of the Toastmasters organization. I encourage all of you to join a local chapter. It is an extraordinary community of wonderful people who will help you in your ques t to be a speaker.Take the challenge. Build your topic, find an audience and speak from your heart. You will probably generate numerous career opportunities. But more importantly, the personal satisfaction, pride, sense of accomplishment, and gift you have given to others, are rewards that are beyond description.

4 Steps To Creating Your Personal Board Of Advisors
4 Steps To Creating Your Personal Board Of Advisors 4 Steps To Creating Your Personal Board Of Advisors My path to entrepreneurship started when, while pregnant with my second child, I was laid off from my job as a producer for MTV. I was upset, sure. But I also felt like I was being given an opportunity to finally find my true dream job â" one where no one else would dictate what I did, whether my position was secure, or how much I was paid. So, instead of applying for new positions, I turned my attention to building a full-service public relations agency based in Philadelphia. Enter: Skai Blue Media . It took five years of feverishly building out my business plan, knocking on doors, creating a network, and cultivating my brand (on my own dime no less). Today, Iâm proud to say Iâve created one of the leading PR firms in Philly and weâre changing the future of public relations. But I didnât get here alone. I owe a large part of my success to my advisory board of âfriendtors.â My friendtors are a group of friends and mentors who have supported me as Iâve built my business. They are more than just pals or business acquaintances. They are my professional peers, whose guidance, wisdom, and care is invaluable to me. My personal board of friendtors includes Mary Doughertry, who leads public relations for the fashion designer Nicole Miller; sheâs taught me so much about achieving an appropriate work-life balance within our industry. I lean on Fox 29 producer Berlinda Garnett to always tell it like it is. Finance executive Payne Brown has helped me to determine whether a personâs vision is in line with mine (and whether he or she is capable of executing it). Last but not least, my husband Bram Reynolds â" whoâs also Skai Blueâs chief operations officer â" is, among other things, an incredible friendtor. He recognizes where I can do better and keeps me honest and moving forward. I wouldnât be the boss and business owner I am today without this group. I encourage everyone I meet to establish his or her own friendtor board. Hereâs how: Taking the leap to change careers, ask for that raise, or become an entrepreneur can require a lot of planning. You may have graduated from a great school with a dual-degree, but youâre still only one person with a lens thatâs limited to what you know. That means you have implicit biases, strengths, and weaknesses. Consider these when selecting your âfriendtors.â Instead of picking a handful of cheerleaders who have the same background and work experience as you, recruit people who are at various stages of different careers. Iâm careful to tap âfriendtorsâ at varying life stages, since these people can offer diverse perspectives on everything from balancing your personal and professional lives to managing people effectively and creating company culture. You want to have people who arenât afraid to tell you âno,â and who donât see themselves as being in direct competition with you. We so often think that in order for someone to help and mentor us, they need to be a big-shot vice president or have 20-plus years of professional experience. Thatâs simply not true. Donât discount the people around you who have a host of wisdom, guidance, and skills to offer. My husband, for example, never gets caught in the gray areas of decision-making like I do. Heâs the first person to tell me, âYouâre doing great, but you handled that inappropriately and youâre not putting your foot down.â His strengths complement my weaknesses. My friendtors have helped me with everything from being an impactful manager to making difficult business decisions. And, like in any successful relationship, itâs important to reciprocate. Sometimes this simply means being open to receiving peopleâs advice and guidance (moving past defensiveness, which is often our first instinct). Itâs also about offering support in any way you can. Find out what they think could make them more successful in their career and then work with your friendtors in a way that makes sense for them and their goals. Also make a point to meet people where they are â" literally. If you know someone hates lunch meetings but loves the outdoors, for example, maybe you suggest going on a hike to discuss a topic of interest. Donât forget to show your friendtors your appreciation, both when they help you and also just generally. Whether itâs with a thank-you note or a quick email update keeping them abreast of the successes to which they directly contribu ted, thereâs no downside to being gracious. Even the most successful professionals struggle (and fail!). Much like a good friend, a good friendtor should support you no matter the circumstances. So itâs all the more important to surround yourself with people who will help you develop into the professional you want to be â" people who believe in your purpose and plan. These same people should let you cry on their shoulders during the low points. My friendtors helped me through a particularly rough period, when I was blindsided by an ex-partner who stole money from our account and disappeared without a trace. You donât have to hide your challenges (or triumphs) from your friendtors. Stay honest with them and know that theyâll be there to help you plan your next steps.
